Tencent (Hunyuan)

State of play as of

Tencent’s in-house model line, which as of September 2026 moves more tokens through the largest public model router than any other Chinese model.

Hunyuan is the Chinese frontier model line that almost nobody argues about. It does not lead benchmark threads the way DeepSeek does and it did not reset open-weight distribution the way Qwen did, and yet in the week to 16 September 2026 its Hy4 preview build was the second-busiest model in the world on OpenRouter, ahead of every DeepSeek and Zhipu entry, at prices someone is actually paying. The interesting tension sits one layer up: the model line is winning developer traffic while Tencent’s consumer assistant, Yuanbao, has been far behind ByteDance’s Doubao on daily users, and the researcher who ran Hunyuan’s pre-training has reportedly left for a US lab. We track what the model line ships, what usage it earns, and what Tencent has not disclosed, with dates and sources.

Fast facts

What it is

The consumer gap
Yuanbao had 7.68 million daily active users in March 2026 against Doubao’s 103 million and Alibaba Tongyi’s 32 million. Tencent has not published a comparable figure since.TMTPost, via CAD
What it has not disclosed
Whether Hy4 preview weights will be released at all, and any Yuanbao user figure after March 2026. Without either, router volume is the only public measure of how much the line is used.CAD reporting

The state of play

  1. Tencent’s Hy4 preview was the second-busiest model in the world on OpenRouter for the seven days to 16 September 2026, at 12 trillion tokens, behind OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna at 17.3 trillion and ahead of every DeepSeek and Zhipu build; Tencent’s older Hy3 placed seventh at 4.47 trillion. Eight of the top ten were Chinese, and the Chinese entries carried 63.8 trillion tokens against 20.79 trillion for the two American ones. Two details change how that reads. Per-token pricing pulled from OpenRouter’s models API in the same session puts Hy4 preview at 83.4 cents per million prompt tokens and 2 dollars 50 per million completion tokens, so the volume is paid, while the Nvidia entry at ninth is the variant published at zero. And a router leaderboard measures where developers send traffic when they are paying by the token, not which model is best.

  2. Leiphone reported as an exclusive, citing people it did not name, that Yao Xingcheng (姚星丞), who ran pre-training for the Hunyuan large language model and left Tencent in July 2026, has joined Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab, and put his Tencent package in the tens of millions of yuan a year. This is one outlet’s sourcing on an unannounced move and is unconfirmed elsewhere, so read the salary figure loosely and the direction of travel firmly. Keep him distinct from Shunyu Yao (姚顺雨), the ex-OpenAI researcher who rebuilt the Hy3 base model and to whom Hunyuan’s multimodal head reports; they are two different people and the trade press has run both names in the same week.

  3. Yonglong Tian became head of multimodal at Tencent Hunyuan, reporting to Shunyu Yao. He came from Google Research, DeepMind and OpenAI, joined Tencent in July 2026, and was added to the CEO and President’s Office. Read the two 2026 talent items together rather than separately: Tencent lost the person who ran pre-training and hired a senior multimodal researcher out of the same Western labs in the same quarter.

  4. Tencent reported first-half 2026 net profit of 114.1 billion yuan, up 10 percent, with WeChat at 1.439 billion monthly users, and disclosed alongside it that calls to the then-new Hy3 model jumped more than 68-fold in the week after launch, with the company buying more compute to keep up. The 68-fold figure is Tencent’s own disclosure of its own product’s growth off a launch-week base, not an audited usage series, and a multiple off a small base is not a level.

  5. For one week the five most-used models in the world by API traffic on OpenRouter were all Chinese, and Hunyuan 3, open-sourced only on 6 July, jumped to third with weekly growth above 999 percent. Xiaomi’s MiMo-V2.5 took first at 10.5 trillion tokens and two DeepSeek models held second and fifth. That week is the start of the usage run that put Hy4 preview second in the world six weeks later.

  6. Tencent released and open-sourced Hy3 and made its agent features free inside the Yuanbao app. The same week Meituan and DeepSeek moved the same way, and the pattern across all three is consistent: open the weights, give away the agent layer, and compete on distribution rather than API margin.

    CAD reportingRead the issue →

  7. Hy3 Preview reached first place on OpenRouter’s weekly token-usage chart at 3.66 trillion tokens, in both total volume and share, and TMTPost reported that Tencent had switched its Yuanbao assistant’s default model from DeepSeek to Hy3 and was steering business-unit usage toward Hy3 by making it the only cost-free option for internal developers, with other models billed against a monthly quota. Hy3 Preview is a 295-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 21 billion active parameters and a 256K context window, rebuilt from scratch by Shunyu Yao after he joined from OpenAI. The caveat published with it at the time still stands: Yuanbao’s daily active users were 7.68 million in March 2026 against Doubao’s 103 million and Tongyi’s 32 million, so a better base model had not yet fixed a consumer product that had not found its hook.

  8. Hunyuan 3 shipped as an open preview in late April 2026, inside a sixteen-day stretch in which DeepSeek V4 also went out under Apache 2.0 and Kimi K2.6 under MIT, days after a widely read argument that China’s AI companies were going closed source. What emerged instead was a hybrid, and CAD read it that way when it covered the stretch in June: open weights for distribution and developer adoption, closed pricing on hosted inference for the margin. Hunyuan is one of the clearest cases, because the open release and the paid router volume are the same model line.

Our reporting on Tencent (Hunyuan)

  1. Tencent Has the World’s Second-Busiest Model and Lost Its Pre-Training Chief

OpenRouter’s weekly leaderboard, computed from the token bucket ending 16 September, puts Tencent’s Hy4 preview second in the world at 12 trillion tokens, behind OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna at 17.3 trillion and ahead of every DeepSeek build. Eight of the top ten models are Chinese: GLM 5.3 Flash from Z.ai at 11.3 trillion, DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 at 11.2, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash at 10.3, Xiaomi’s MiMo-V2.5 at 7.83, Tencent’s older Hy3 at 4.47, an April build of DeepSeek V4 Flash at 4.24, Nvidia’s Nemotron 3 Ultra at 3.49 and GLM 5.3 at 2.46. The Chinese entries carry 63.8 trillion tokens against 20.79 trillion for the two American ones, a ratio of 3.07, which was recomputed from OpenRouter’s own published figures rather than taken from the Sina piece that ran the same claim that morning. Pricing pulled from OpenRouter’s models API in the same session changes how the table reads: Hy4 preview costs 83.4 cents per million prompt tokens and 2 dollars 50 per million completion tokens, while the Nvidia entry at ninth is the variant published at zero, so one of the two American models in the world’s top ten by usage is free. The second half of the issue runs the other way. Leiphone reported as an exclusive, citing people it did not name, that Yao Xingcheng, who ran pre-training for Tencent’s Hunyuan large language model and left in July, has joined Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab, and put the Tencent package in the tens of millions of yuan a year. That is one outlet’s sourcing on an unannounced move and is unconfirmed elsewhere, so the salary figure is loose and only the direction of travel is firm. The same outlet published a second piece arguing that Chinese platforms hiring pre-training researchers out of Google’s Gemini team have mostly bought seniority rather than the undocumented judgement calls that decide whether a training run works. In the Briefing: Insta360 grew first-half revenue 50.29 percent to 5.517 billion yuan while net profit fell 94.15 percent, and subtracting its filed first quarter from the half leaves a second-quarter net loss of 54.2 million yuan that no outlet printed; Huawei announced the Ascend 960 SuperPoD at Huawei Connect, up to 4,096 NPU cards and 8 exaflops of FP8, on the claim that chip-to-chip communication eats more than 40 percent of training time in a 100,000-card cluster; and Zhipu disclosed that a GLM-5.3-driven Infra Agent did much of the engineering on its own inference stack, which chief scientist Tang Jie calls an early form of recursive self-improvement.

  2. DeepSeek Opened 150 Engineering Jobs and Zero Research Jobs

DeepSeek posted about 150 openings on 8 September and not one of them is a research role, per a WeChat notice read closely by QbitAI and republished by 36Kr. They split into server-side development engineers across six directions, which are the large-model research platform, Agent framework components, R&D efficiency infrastructure, the DeepSeek API, online serving and data engineering, and agent elastic-compute engineers across two, platform development and low-level systems, with a target profile of senior backend people two to ten years in. QbitAI puts the whole company at 300 to 500 people, so a single round is worth somewhere between a quarter and a half of existing headcount, hired into one function; an investor at a front-line firm told Sina Tech the goal for this year is 1,000 people, which would put DeepSeek level with Zhipu, whose 2025 prospectus listed 883 employees. What the 150 are being hired to build has a name: DSec, for DeepSeek Elastic Compute, disclosed for the first time in the V4 technical report as three Rust components, an API gateway called Apiserver, an Edge agent on every host machine and a cluster monitor called Watcher, wired over a homemade RPC protocol on top of 3FS, the distributed filesystem DeepSeek open-sourced last year. Cui Tianyi, who runs the DeepSeek Harness team, gave the reason in one sentence: scale produces complexity, and the complexity turns around and demands more scale. Underneath it is the money. Reuters reported on 9 September that DeepSeek has hired CITIC Securities to prepare a listing on Shanghai’s STAR Market and aims to start the process this year, which TechNode carried the same morning; Sina’s wire adds that CITIC has made contact and entered due diligence, that the two sides have not signed a formal listing-tutoring agreement, and that DeepSeek has said nothing officially.

  3. The Carmaker

BYD, the world’s largest EV maker, published its first AI paper. HyWorldVLA, a two-branch driving world model, scored 90.59 on the public NAVSIM v1 self-driving benchmark, which BYD’s paper reports as the top score posted on it, and held a 19-point lead over the strongest baseline across 655 rain-and-fog scenes. Paired with the in-house Xuanji A3, which BYD calls China’s first 4nm automotive-grade driving chip at about 700 TOPS, it gives BYD its own data, model and silicon stack. The benchmark record is not yet a shipping product and BYD has named no deployment date.

  4. The Transplant

A product-less humanoid startup hit a billion-dollar valuation, built by Huawei’s former self-driving lead. China’s autonomous-driving talent is transplanting into robots.

  5. The Stack

Moore Threads open-sourced MusaCoder-27B-RL, a code model trained end to end on its own MTT S5000 GPU cluster, and reported it scoring above Claude Opus 4.7 on KernelBench. The signal was less the score than a domestic GPU completing a full from-scratch training loop.

Common questions

What is Tencent Hunyuan?

Hunyuan (腾讯混元) is Tencent’s in-house large-language-model line, served through Tencent Cloud and public model routers and fronted for consumers by the Yuanbao assistant. Build names appear in coverage as both “Hunyuan 3” and “Hy3”, and as “Hy4 preview” for the newer build; they are the same line. Hy3 was previewed in April 2026 and open-sourced on 6 July 2026.

How widely used is Tencent Hunyuan?

On OpenRouter’s weekly token leaderboard for the seven days to 16 September 2026, Tencent’s Hy4 preview was second in the world at 12 trillion tokens, behind OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna at 17.3 trillion and ahead of every DeepSeek and Zhipu build, with the older Hy3 seventh at 4.47 trillion. CAD pulled those figures cookieless from OpenRouter on 17 September 2026. Treat it as a volume metric and not a quality ranking: it measures where developers send paid traffic, and it moves week to week.

Is Tencent Hunyuan open source?

Hy3 is. Tencent previewed it in April 2026 and open-sourced it on 6 July 2026, at 295 billion total parameters with 21 billion active and a 256K context window, and made the agent features free inside Yuanbao at the same time. Whether the newer Hy4 preview weights will be released has not been disclosed, so the open-weight claim applies to Hy3 and not automatically to the whole line.

How much does Tencent Hunyuan cost?

Hy4 preview was listed on OpenRouter at 83.4 cents per million prompt tokens and 2 dollars 50 per million completion tokens when CAD pulled the models API on 17 September 2026, so its router volume is paid rather than free. Hy3 has been quoted on Tencent Cloud at about 1.2 yuan, roughly 17 cents, per million input tokens, dropping to 0.4 yuan on a cache hit.

Why is Tencent Hunyuan less discussed than DeepSeek or Qwen?

Because its distribution has been business-facing rather than consumer-facing, and its releases have not been framed as benchmark events. The gap shows in the one consumer number on the record: Yuanbao had 7.68 million daily active users in March 2026 against Doubao’s 103 million and Alibaba Tongyi’s 32 million, per TMTPost as carried by CAD, and Tencent has not published a comparable figure since. Tencent also steered its own business units onto Hy3 by making it the only cost-free option for internal developers, which builds usage without building public argument.
